Ireland’s East and Midlands

The city of Dublin and the commuter belt of the capital are popular visitor hotspots and an ideal starting point for exploring the East. North of the metropolis are the Hill of Tara, the Boyne Valley with the over 5,000-year-old tombs Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth or the Cooley Peninsula with the medieval city of Carlingford of major attractions.

The Wicklow Mountains south of Dublin are home to the Glendalough Monastery and Powerscourt Gardens, two of Ireland’s most visited attractions. The counties Wexford and Waterford further south were influenced by the Vikings and later the Normans. The south-east of Ireland is the sunniest region of the Emerald Isle.

The heartland of Ireland, the so-called midlands, is not as touristic as the coastal regions. But even here there are many highlights to discover such as the Rock of Cashel, Clonmacnoise on the banks of the Shannon, the extensive Norman fortress Trim Castle or the Hill of Uisneach, which was considered the centre of the island in Ireland’s mythology.
