Portumna Castle and Gardens
Portumna Castle built in the early 17th century is situated on the banks of the Shannon lake Lough Derg. 1862 it burned down completely, but has been partially restored and can now be visited. The property also includes a walled garden and formal gardens adjacent to the house.
On a meadow between the castle and Lough Derg are some mulberry trees. Once it was the intention to enter the silk business and to locate silkworms in the specially created mulberry plantation. But unfortunately they had planted the wrong mulberry species. The silkworms did not come, but the trees remained.
