Martello Tower Sutton

Martello Tower in Sutton

In 1804, the mood along Ireland’s east coast must have been between lively and panic-stricken. In anticipation of an invasion of Britain by Napoleon Bonaparte, a total of 50 defence towers were built in Ireland alone. The model was a tower near Mortella in Corsica, which the British could not take. Its architecture left a lasting impression and so the architectural style was copied without further ado. However, there was a transmission breakdown with the name, Mortella became Martello. One could think that the towers were indeed impregnable, since many of them are still in good condition today. In fact, however, the feared invasion never took place and so the Martello Towers never really had to prove themselves.
