Southern Cross Monument - Velvet Strand

The Velvet Strand in Portmarnock

With a length of 5 kilometres there is a sand dune south of Portmarnock, whose sea facing side is known as Velvet Strand. From the beach you have a beautiful view of the nearby Howth Peninsula, Ireland’s Eye and Lambay Island.

Unbelievable but true: Starting at Velvet Strand, aviation history was written.ย In 1930, the Southern Cross took off with Captain Charles Kingsford Smith and his crew for the first Atlantic crossing from east to west on the beach at Portmarnock. The globe statue “Eccentric Orbit” on the northern beach commemorates this milestone in aviation history. Two years later, the first solo flight across the Atlantic from east to west also took off at the same location.
