Trim Castle

Trim Castle

In 1172, Hugh de Lacy erected a fortification on the banks of the Boyne River, which after several years of construction and expansion became the largest and most important fortress ever built by the Normans on Irish soil.ย A tour of the keep leads past models that impressively illustrate the continuous expansion of the plant. The tour also leads up to the roof from where you can see the huge dimension of the area.

The fortress was surrounded by a mighty ring wall around which a deep moat ran. A drawbridge on the southern outer wall led into the interior. At the centre was the 22-metre-high keep with four external towers, of which three are still standing.

In 1995, the makers of the film “Braveheart” chose Trim Castle as filming location for their epic movie.
