Norman Motte

Norman Motte Glasscarrig

North of Ballygarrett, near Glasscarrig Point, is a mound of earth on which the Normans built a so-called “Motte” in the late 11th century.ย This was a wooden tower, which lay on an artificially erected tower mountain. Around it there was a ring ditch and probably also other smaller wooden buildings as well as a wooden wall. Unfortunately, only the mound has survived the centuries. The complex was a strategically important fortress for the invaders, because from its exposed position above the beach one could (just like today) overlook the surrounding land and the sea.
