Mussenden Temple

Mussenden Temple

This classic circular building, based on the temple of Vesta in Tivoli, was erected on the cliff edge 60 metres above the beach of Downhill. It served Frederick Augustus Hervey, the Bishop of Derry and Earl of Bristol, as a library and was named after his cousin, whom the churchman was fond of.ย Standing in the well preserved building and looking through the high windows, you have a fantastic view over the beach and the sea.

All kinds of stories are told about the extravagant bishop. It is said that he had horse races held down on the beach, which he followed from above together with other clergymen. Bets are said to have been placed and who won got a larger, more lucrative congregation.
