James Joyce Tower - Sandycove

James Joyce Tower in Sandycove

In many places along the east coast of Ireland you will find so-called Martello Towers. These round towers were built at the beginning of the 19th century in anticipation of a French invasion. A particularly interesting example is the James Joyce Tower in Sandycove, which can be visited all year round. Today the tower is a museum and dedicated to the work of Ireland’s most famous writer James Joyce. In 1904 Joyce spent a few days here and set a literary monument to the Tower in the opening scene of his masterpiece Ulysses.
