Cottage on Great Blasket Island

Great Blasket Island

The largest of the Blasket Islands, An Blascaod Mór – the Great Blasket Island, was permanently inhabited until 1953. Nowadays, the island is a true paradise for nature lovers and hikers, who appreciate it for its seclusion far away from civilization. This has also been the case, when people still lived on the island, which is why the islanders preserved their own way of life and the Irish language. An insight of how life on the island was being like, was given by autobiographic narratives of authors like Tomás Ó Criomhthain and Peig Sayers, who lived here.
