Londonderry Walled City

Londonderry

The City of Londonderry – or simply called Derry – has many faces.ย Along the River Foyle Northern Ireland’s second largest city presents itself as an idyllic and livable centre.

Derry owes its nickname “The Walled City” to its 1.5 kilometres long walkable city wall from the 17th century, which is still almost completely preserved. The walls were built to protect Protestant settlers who settled here after Derry was conquered by the English. In the valley to the west of the city wall is the Catholic district of Bogside. Between the Free Derry Corner and the Bloody Sunday Monument, several houses are decorated with the famous murals, which provide a vivid insight into the time of the “Troubles”, as the Northern Ireland conflict is called here.
