Bannow Church

Bannow Church

St. Mary’s of Bannow was built in the 13th century by the Normans. The small church with the surrounding, still active cemetery is certainly not the most attractive church ruin of the country. Nevertheless a remarkable one, as it is the only remnant of an entire city that was here in the Middle Ages. Bannow – an Irish Pompeii? The fate of the city is unclear. When Cromwell’s troops struck Ireland, Bannow was still there, as records and descriptions of street names and buildings prove. It is believed that the city fell victim to the siltation of Bannow Bay.
