Bannow Bay

Bannow Bay

Bannow Bay is a bit off the beaten track and it is quite leisurely along the bay. Yet this bay plays an extraordinary role in Ireland’s history. Norman troops from Wales and England first landed here in Ireland in 1169. That they were called to aid by a deposed Irish king, who wanted to reclaim his throne, appears today as a bitter irony. This resulted in the Norman conquest of Ireland, which brought with it centuries of oppression.
