The Burren
The most unusual landscape in the west of Ireland is the barren limestone area of The Burren. In the backdrop of lush green meadows along the coast, bizarre grey hills rise up, reminding of a lunar landscape. Rivers disappear into the ground and flow on in the underground, huge boulders lie on bare plateaus and everything seems a little surreal. Those who take the time to explore the landscape will notice that the Burren is not as barren as it seems at first glance. A unique flora thrives in the cracks and trenches between the rocks. Three quarters of all species found in Ireland grow in the Burren - including arctic and alpine plants.
