The Maidens

Na Maighdeanacha
County Antrim

It must have been a hard life for the lighthouse keepers’ families on the tiny Maiden Islands in the North Channel. Around 9 kilometres off the coast of Ballygally, lighthouses were built in 1829 on two tiny islands: West Maiden (Northern Rock) and East Maiden (Southern Rock). The lighthouse keepers lived here all year round.
